Dvar for Vayikra (Leviticus 1:1-5:26)

Parshat Vayikra describes various sacrifices. Among the descriptions, there is one Passuk that says that every sacrifice requires salt, that salt should not be omitted, and then reiterates that salt should be used (2:13). Why is salt such an essential ingredient?

The Sefer Hachinuch explains that salt, an odorless substance on its own, adds taste to food, and to offer a sacrifice lacking flavor would be inappropriate. This “giving” substance represents our contemplation of others’ needs, which is why we still have this custom today when we add salt to Challah. This consideration is an important growth aspect to the sacrifices brought, but also a key to our personal growth today. Our goal should be not to please ourselves but to find ways to add flavor and joy to others.
